How’s your Agni?

According to Ayurveda, your general health is directly linked with your digestive health. Agni means fire and it is seen as the metaphor for all metabolic functions in the body. It includes the digestive function, sense perception, cellular metabolism and mental assimilation. There is a link between mental well-being and digestive health which goes both ways.?According to Ayurveda, when agni is balanced it causes emotions that are beneficial to health: courage, cheerfulness, lucid, intelligence. When agni is out of balance it causes emotions that are destructive to health: fear, anger, confusion, idiocy.
Effects of low digestive fire: When your digestive fire is low a plethora of health problems can arise depending on your constitution (Dosha). Low Agni can result in (Kapha) excess mucous, coughs, asthma, diabetes, obesity, (Pitta) skin problems, heart problems, inflammatory problems, (Vata) nervous conditions, blood disorders, etc. If Agni is low for an extended period of time this results in toxins (ama) building up in your body and can result in more serious health problems such as high cholesterol, fatigue syndromes, tumours, cysts, skin conditions, allergies, cancers, etc

8 easy ways to stoke your fire (AGNI)

1. The simplest way to maintain your Agni is to always make sure your previous meal has been digested before eating again, ie eat when you are hungry.
2. If you generally have a low appetite only eat small meals to gently stoke the fire without smothering it with a heavy meal.
3. Avoid foods that are excessively heavy, cold or wet. Also do not aggravate the fire with foods that are too spicy, oily or fried.
4. Fasting: This naturally allows the fire to increase in the stomach. Don’t fast for too long as the fire will start to consume the tissues.
5. Sip hot water throughout the day (add lemon or ginger for extra benefit)
6. If your appetite is low take something that will increase the heat or activity in your stomach. Flavours that enhance Agni are pungent, sour & salty eg ginger, cayenne pepper, Trikatu, black pepper, cinnamon, lemon, black salt or himalyan pink salt, etc (Try to do this 30 minutes before eating)
7. Take a bitter herb like gentian (Gentiana lutea) directly before you eat to increase the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
8. Exercise is another good way of increasing your digestive fire.
Always Consult a qualified practitioner when treating any medical condition.

Many couples embark on the journey to conception without thought or consideration to their preconception health. It is often only those that have difficulty conceiving that give it any attention at all. All couples who are planning on conceiving are advised to start looking after their health at least 4 months before conception takes place.

If you think, that’s way too long or that you don’t have time to wait… Think again! Make the time. Preconception care may help to reduce risk of miscarriage, birth deformity and many problems associated with pregnancy. Your babys’ health is important and if you look after yourself prior to conception you could improve their health substantially.

This is just a brief guide to preconception care, if you have a specific health problem or fertility issues (amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, endometriosis, fibroids, low sperm count, etc) please make an appointment to discuss this problem further.

Why Preconception Care?

Quite simply it will improve your fertility and the health of your eggs & sperm. Afterall, these are the vital ingredients to make your baby!

So the aim of preconception care is:
1. Optimum Nutrition: The building blocks necessary for the formation of a healthy embryo
2. Detoxification & reduce or avoid exposure to toxins
3. Optimum general and reproductive health for both parents

At least 4 months preconception care is advised for best results. This is to ensure that the health of your eggs and sperm is optimum before conception.

Sperm Fact: Sperm can take up to 116 days to generate and during this time they are susceptible to damage from illness, toxins (pollutants & drugs such as alcohol & cigarettes) and nutritional deficiencies.

Egg Fact: Similarly the egg is vulnerable during maturation, for approximately 100 days leading up to ovulation.

Therefore, having at least 4 months of healthy living before conception will improve the quality of your eggs and sperm, which will optimise the health of your pregnancy, birth and child.

Fathers should take an active role in the preconception preparation. Remember that they contribute at least 50% to a healthy conception. Sperm are even more vulnerable than eggs to toxic exposure & nutritional deficiency. Unlike eggs, which are safely cocooned within the mothers body and are only vulnerable during maturation, sperm are generated wholly during the preconception period, and therefore exposed to any physiological or environmental hazards present at that time. Sperm are also smaller than eggs and are held outside the body, increasing their susceptibility.

Some Basic guidelines

Good Nutrition = Better health

Always Organic: the food industry is rife with unwholesome extras to make your food last longer & grow faster. These toxic chemicals & hormones make their way on to your dinner plate. An easy way to avoid ingesting these toxins is to source organic foods (fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, eggs, grains, etc). Eventhough this may seem like an expensive way to go, in the long run it’ll save on health bills

Always fresh: generally eat foods within 24hours of preparing. The older the food, the less nutrients and it gives bacteria and fungus a chance to grow

Purified water: Unfortunately if you dont have your own well you really cant be sure what’s in your water. Many harmful substances that affect your fertility are pumped into the public water eg flouride. To make sure your water is good quality use a good filter and use this water for drinking and cooking. Example Big Berky water filters

Dairy: if you have any signs of intolerance to cow dairy substitute it with goat & sheep dairy. Whatever dairy you do consume make sure it’s always taken hot with digestive spices and that it’s a good quality organic dairy product.

Good balance of protein & carbohydrates for every meal

Good oils: hemp seed, fish oil, cold pressed olive, walnut, avocado, etc – use as much as you want cold – pour over food once it has been cooked or use on salads, breads, etc instead of butter or margarine

If you eat fish – eat oily fish x 3 weekly (avoid large fish as higher in mercury)

For vegetarians and vegans use hemp seed oil, rapeseed oil, good quality raw nut butters, etc

If having meat only have organic but try to limit red meats

Have lots of vegetables – make sure they’re organic. During the winter its best to cook them but during the spring/summer you can include more raw salads, etc

Fruits (more during the summer & less during winter) go for darker fruits berries, cherries, pomegranates, etc

Increase nuts & seeds (father – sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds are high in zinc)

Avoid refined sugar – alternatives: dark muscavado, treacle, molasses, dark agave. Always check labels if buying processed foods

Avoid refined grains – only use whole and minimise wheat

Avoid Alcohol

Reduce coffee and eliminate at least 1 month prior to conception

Tea: Max 1-2 per day

Salt: only sea salt or himalayan rock salt to taste

Include cumin, ginger, fennel daily

Avoid all junk foods

Avoid deep fried foods

Avoid microwaved foods

Avoid plastic wrapping or storing foods for long periods of time in plastic

Use stainless steel cookware

Take a pregnancy multi at least 4 months prior to conception

For the father – take a general multi

Ayurveda

Ayurveda views procreation as the ultimate creative act and the most potent driving force in our human destiny.

Fertility is seen as the sum total of all optimally digested foods and experiences. The logic is based on the principles of Ayurvedic anatomy and physiology. Like everything in Ayurveda, fertility is viewed in terms of overall health. Optimum fertility involves the quality of the digestive fire, the quality of the tissues and the free flowing nature of the channels. When these are all functioning properly then the reproductive tissues can be nourished and fertility can take its course.

Food enters our stomach where the digestive fire turns it into the essence of food. From here it flows through the different tissues where they take up what nutrients are necessary for them to function effiicently. Below is a list of the tissues and their functions:

1. Plasma tissue: Rasa dhatu

Function: Giving pleasure (prinana), nourishing the blood, moistening the skin and mucus membranes, protecting and preserving

2. Blood tissue: Rakta dhatu

Function: Giving vitality (jivanam), giving colour, nourishing the muscle tissue

3. Muscle tissue: Mamsa dhatu

Function: Binding the body together (lepen), strengthening, nourishing fat tissue and waste products.

4. Fat tissue: Meda dhatu

Function: Oleating the joints, producing sweat, nourishing the bone tissue

5. Bone tissue: Asthi dhatu

Function: Giving support and nourishing the nervous tissue

6. Nerve tissue: Majja dhatu

Function: Giving oleation, filling the bones and nourishing the reproductive tissue

7. Reproductive tissue: Shukra dhatu

Function: Generating reproductive fluids, producing an orgasm, achieving conception, strengthening the body and creating fondness.

Maintaining Fertility

Optimising fertility is one of the most important aspects of Ayurveda. There are certain foods and herbs that have an affinity for the reproductive system that anyone wanting to enhance their fertility could include in their diet. These are usually foods that have qualities of sweetness, nourishing and building. Examples include:

Nuts: Almonds, walnuts and pumpkin seeds

Dairy: Milk, cream, ghee (organic)

Seafoods: Seaweeds

Flowers: Roses, saffron, jasmine, flower pollen

Fruits: Dates, pomegranates, grapes

Herbs: Organic Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosa), Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens), Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris), Bala (Sida cordifolia)

Treating Infertility

Problems with infertility can arise when nutrition does not reach the reproductive tissue; this can happen due to under nutrition, poor digestion or obstruction due to toxins. Infertility can also arise when the reproductive tissue is over taxed or damaged by infection or trauma

General considerations:

· Understand both partners’ Ayurvedic constitution (vata, pitta, kapha)

· Clear any obstructions or blockages

· Tonify any weaknesses

· Ensure that the digestive fire is strong

· Ensure that the nervous system is relaxed

· Being loving and loved is the best tonic for fertility

Female Fertility

The Ayurvedic view of the menstrual cycle:

Average menses are considered to be 4-5 days, moderate flow, moderate colour, no clots, no discomfort.

Reference: Sebastian Pole

Many therapies in Ayurveda are beneficial for fertility (again depending on what is needed for you): We recommend the following: Katti Basti, Shirodhara, Nasya, & Nabhi vijnanam.

Herbal medicines

There are too many herbs to mention that help with fertility issues. It is generally best to seek professional advice as they can recommend herbs that will be more specific to your needs.

Generally speaking…

Some beneficial nutritive herbs: Nettle, red clover, oat straw, raspberry leaf & dandelion – 3 cups daily
Shatavari is a very beneficial Ayurvedic female tonic herb. Take with hot milk (ginger, cardamom & cinnamon) 1 tsp daily in evening
Other useful fertility herbs are False unicorn root, Chaste berry, Wild Yam, Saw palmetto, Peony root, Mugwort, etc

Many herbs used during the preconception phase should be discontinued after conception – for this reason when using herbs please seek the advice of a professional herbalist & don’t try and conceive during the 4 months prior to your planned conception date.

Homeopathy is also a useful tool to enhance and promote fertility but it is also best to consult with a Homeopath.

General guidelines:

Act as if you’re already pregnant…

Adopt a healthy lifestyle
Avoid environmental toxins (chemicals, heavy metals, radiation)
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, etc
Use only natural cosmetics
Avoid chemical hair dyes
Take regular exercise – 30-40 minutes x 3 weekly of aerobic exercise or yoga daily – visit free online yoga classes or join a local yoga class
Stress reduction – yoga, meditation, gentle exercise, mindfulness. Limit stressful situations if possible (reading/viewing material, certain social situations, etc)
Daily meditation
Use a fertility chart and know your cycle (you can easily find charts online)
Check your cervical mucous: just before ovulation- it should resemble raw egg white and easily stretched between the fingers

This is only a brief guide to get you started. If you would like extra advice please book an appointment 061 622751

At Satmya we offer consultations in Ayurevda, Homeopathy, Herbalism and Naturopathy.

“Going local does not mean walling off the outside world. It Means nurturing locally owned businesses which use local resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages and serve primarily local consumers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependant on imports. Control moves from the boardrooms of distant corporations and back into the community where it belongs.”

                                     - Michael H. Shuman, author of the book Going Local.

1. Local Economic Stimulus

When you purchase at locally owned businesses rather than nationally owned, more money is kept in the community because locally-owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms. Purchasing local helps grow other businesses as well as the local tax base.

2. Non Profits Receive Greater Support

Local business owners donate more to local charities than non-local owners.

3. Unique Businesses Create Character & Prosperity

The unique character of your local community is defined in large part by the business that reside there, and that plays a big factor in your overall satisfaction with where you live and the value of you home and property.

4. Environmental Impact Is Reduced

Small local business usually set up shop in the town/village center, providing a centralized variety that is much friendlier to a community’s walk score than out of town shopping malls. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.

5. Most New Jobs Are Provided By Local Businesses

Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally. Plus the more jobs you have in your local community the less people are going to have to commute which means more time and less traffic and pollution.

6. Customer Service Is Better

Local businesses often hire people with more specific product expertise for better customer service. You are also going to see these people around town and they are less likely to blow you off or be rude becauses they have to face you day after day.

7. Local Business Owners Invest In Community

Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s welfare and future.

8. Public Benefits Far Outweigh Public Costs

Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure and more efficiently utilize public services relative to chain stores.

9. Competition And Diversity Leads To More Consumer Choices

A marketplace of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term.

10. You Matter More

We talk a lot about exerting influence with your purchasing choices, or “voting with your wallet.” It’s a fact that business respond to their customers but your values and desires are much more influential to you local community business than the large big box stores.

What is a Neti pot: A neti pot is a device used for performing jala neti, an Ayurvedic cleanse for the sinus cavities. This is the oldest form of nasal irrigation that uses a saline solution administered via the neti pot and followed by specific breathing techniques.

To purchase: €25 plus postage and packaging €4.80 (anywhere in Ireland)

Generally it is best to be taught to use a neti pot by an Ayurvedic practitioner or experienced user as you will gain more benefit by performing the jala neti correctly.

Jala neti is an ancient ayurvedic technique that dates back thousands of years. It is used in pranayama breathing to ensure the breath is free and easy (as this is of utmost importance for both). The breath is seen as being extremely important in bringing about change in the body and mind. Pranayama is all about regulating and controlling the breath and hereby the life force in us.

Yogis often begin their practice by doing jala neti to ensure their breathing is regulated properly. Jala neti is also responsible for the stimulation of the pituitary gland in the brain. This stimulation awakens the energy centre behind the forehead called the Ajna Chakra. This energy centre must be sufficiently stimulated for higher states of meditation. Jala neti also helps with relaxation due to it’s effect on maintaining free flowing breath which helps to supply abundant oxygen around the body.

Jala neti is also very useful for the following conditions: sinusitis sufferers, hayfever, allergies, headaches, first stage of colds & much more.

While theory always sounds wonderful, Jala Neti has in fact provided tremendous benefits. The following practical study is an interesting example of the attitude towards the practice in a classic before and after way. Also, the study concludes with the actual benefits for varying symptoms in terms of actual percentages. We hope this study helps to put at rest any apprehensions that one may have about the efficacy of neti.
